In my years as a Member in Discernment, I have come to understand that prophetic witness is a far larger part of ministry than I ever imagined. This realization has deepened especially in recent times, when the call to stand for justice has become urgent and unavoidable. The prophetic voice is not just about preaching or teaching; it is about speaking truth to power, even when that truth puts us at risk. This is a ministry that demands courage, conviction, and a willingness to face persecution.

The Reality of Prophetic Witness Today

Rev. Dr. Karen Georgia Thompson has spoken powerfully about the role of prophetic witness in our current moment. She reminds us that standing up for justice often means putting ourselves in harm’s way. This is not a new challenge, but it is one that feels especially pressing now. Other major religious leaders across America echo this sentiment, emphasizing that ministry today requires more than comfort and safety. It demands a readiness to face persecution and even arrest as part of the work of justice.

This reality can be intimidating. The risks are real, and the consequences can be severe. Yet, the prophetic witness calls us to move beyond fear and complacency. It calls us to act with boldness and faith, trusting that justice is worth the cost.

Personal Journey: From Fear to Boldness

Before I obtained American citizenship, I was afraid to speak publicly about issues of justice. The fear of retribution held me back. I worried about the consequences for myself and my loved ones. This fear silenced my voice and limited my ministry.

Now, with citizenship secured, I feel a renewed sense of freedom and responsibility. I intend to speak out much more boldly. The truth is clear to me: there is no Jesus without justice. Our faith calls us to challenge systems of oppression and to stand firmly against injustice wherever it appears.

Challenging Christian Nationalism and Empire

One of the most urgent tasks in prophetic ministry today is to debunk Christian Nationalism and the empire it supports. Christian Nationalism distorts the gospel by aligning faith with political power and exclusion. It uses religion to justify inequality, discrimination, and violence.

Prophetic witness demands that we expose these falsehoods and reclaim the true message of Jesus. Jesus’ ministry was about liberation, inclusion, and justice for the marginalized. To follow Jesus means to reject any ideology that props up empire at the expense of human dignity.

Practical Steps for Prophetic Ministry

Engaging in prophetic witness requires intentional action. Here are some practical ways to live out this calling:

  • Educate yourself and others about the intersections of faith, justice, and politics. Understanding the issues deeply strengthens your voice.

  • Join or support movements that work for justice, even if it means standing in uncomfortable or risky spaces.

  • Use your platform—whether in sermons, social media, or community gatherings—to speak truth boldly.

  • Build solidarity with those who face persecution for their faith and justice work.

  • Pray and reflect regularly to sustain courage and clarity in your witness.

The Cost and the Hope

Prophetic witness is costly. It may lead to rejection, persecution, or arrest. Yet, it also brings hope and transformation. When we stand for justice, we participate in God’s work of healing and renewal in the world.

The prophetic voice is a beacon in dark times. It calls us to live with integrity and courage, trusting that justice will prevail. This is the heart of ministry today.
